Issue Position: The Need for Change

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012
Issues: Education

Some educational "leaders" continue to malign public education-our state's most precious resource. In the past decade, the state board has been focused on pushing personal agendas making the already convoluted state curriculum political in nature. The science and social studies curriculum became a national joke and educators were left confused by a process that left them out!

Texas remains 43rd in graduation rates and has consistently remained at the bottom in per pupil spending. This past school year hundreds of teachers were fired and students suffered in the neediest schools while the leaders in Austin sat on their hands. We must let go of the money that is there and give it to the student's of this state.

The answer is not more charter schools: many are just as unsuccessful as public schools. I support innovation in education. The state board should support our existing Texas public schools by providing opportunities for creative instructional decisions and positive classroom environments.
